More Sunriver

Yesterday we went on a "sampler" of three short hikes in the Newberry Volcano National Monument area just south of Sunriver. First stop was Paulina Falls, a very short hike to a huge waterfall.

Second stop was to check out the largest obsidian flow in the United States.

And third was a short hike along part of the trail around Paulina Lake, the second deepest lake in Oregon (behind Crater Lake). We passed through a section with zillions (yes ZILLIONS) of tiny frogs or toads. It was almost creepy, there were so many, but the girls had a blast trying to catch them.

Back to the pool for our daily swim...

Wednesday night was the outdoor concert at the lodge. We weren't all that thrilled with the music this year--a rather uninspired Blues group--but the temperature was perfect and it was just fun to picnic out on the golf course and people watch.

Caroline trying the hula hoops they had at the concert.

Margaret trying a different kind of hoop game on Thursday when we visited the High Desert Museum. This was in the Pioneer Settlement Living History exhibit, where they had several people dressed in character talking with the visitors and showing them how the pioneers worked and played, and letting the kids have a try at both.

Caroline trying her hand at a quill pen to write her school lessons.

Inside the museum the girls enjoyed several really excellent exhibits, including this one about the high desert Indians, where Margaret got to try dancing in a native costume.

We spent a big chunk of the day at this great museum, seeing cool exhibits about bats, quilting, early settlers, desert raptors and other wildlife, etc... The girls love this place, and we adults all had fun too. Tonight was pretty low key, although I introduced Margaret and Caroline to the game Life, and they got pretty keyed up by that. Tomorrow it's off to the bakery and hopefully a float down the river.

That's good they liked the museum. I still remember when we went there a few year ago and one of them, screamed and cried when we tried to put on a puppet show for them! LOL
