Can't believe it's Friday!

Breakfast of the Sunriver champions! Yum.

Time to hit the river. Caroline decided to try floating in the River Rat by herself this year. As you can see, she took to it quite well.

Margaret and I shared a kayak for most of the trip. Margaret's paddling and navigating skills are really improving.

Lunch break.

Jeff and Caroline BOTH taking it easy on the after-lunch stretch.

Margaret wanted a turn in the innertube by the end of the float, and gave it a thumbs up.

Tuckered out after a really big uphill bike ride to the park, after a really big dinner, after a really big day of fun, after a really big breakfast donut...

Where has the week gone?

More Sunriver

Yesterday we went on a "sampler" of three short hikes in the Newberry Volcano National Monument area just south of Sunriver. First stop was Paulina Falls, a very short hike to a huge waterfall.

Second stop was to check out the largest obsidian flow in the United States.

And third was a short hike along part of the trail around Paulina Lake, the second deepest lake in Oregon (behind Crater Lake). We passed through a section with zillions (yes ZILLIONS) of tiny frogs or toads. It was almost creepy, there were so many, but the girls had a blast trying to catch them.

Back to the pool for our daily swim...

Wednesday night was the outdoor concert at the lodge. We weren't all that thrilled with the music this year--a rather uninspired Blues group--but the temperature was perfect and it was just fun to picnic out on the golf course and people watch.

Caroline trying the hula hoops they had at the concert.

Margaret trying a different kind of hoop game on Thursday when we visited the High Desert Museum. This was in the Pioneer Settlement Living History exhibit, where they had several people dressed in character talking with the visitors and showing them how the pioneers worked and played, and letting the kids have a try at both.

Caroline trying her hand at a quill pen to write her school lessons.

Inside the museum the girls enjoyed several really excellent exhibits, including this one about the high desert Indians, where Margaret got to try dancing in a native costume.

We spent a big chunk of the day at this great museum, seeing cool exhibits about bats, quilting, early settlers, desert raptors and other wildlife, etc... The girls love this place, and we adults all had fun too. Tonight was pretty low key, although I introduced Margaret and Caroline to the game Life, and they got pretty keyed up by that. Tomorrow it's off to the bakery and hopefully a float down the river.

Sunriver 2009

Day One. What a way to start vacation--playing Nintendo DS in bed!

Wading in the river on our first bike ride.

Jeff and Margaret taking a quick rest stop on our VERY long loop. It turned out to be a bit longer than we expected since we took a wrong turn and got ourselves a bit confused. No worries, though, since we weren't in a hurry to get anywhere.

Lunch time.

Margaret relaxing in the kiddy pool.

The girls just can't get enough of Daddy in the pool.

Day Two. We had a VERY laid back morning today. Painted finger and toenails, dined on Captain Crunch, threw some pots...
Here are the girls trying out the pottery clay and potter's wheel that Margaret got for her birthday. What a treat to be able to make the mess at someone ELSE's house!

Caroline and Margaret getting ready for their trail ride. This year they did it by themselves. I was proud of how brave they were, and my tailbone was grateful too, since the bikes are about enough for me.

Getting ready for an evening ride around the river loop.

The girls with Grammy and Grampy on the bike ride. A beautiful ending to a wonderful day.

Happy Campers!

Major milestone this week. Margaret and Caroline went away to Girl Scout camp for THREE nights! After wondering and worrying since Sunday night how things were going for them, we picked them up this morning, with cameras in hand. Here's what we found.

Of course wonder and worry wasn't the ONLY thing we did while they were gone... We also found time to enjoy a lovely wine and cheese spread at home one night, and had a great Thai food dinner out with our friends on another night.

Fourth of July

Caroline proudly displaying the parachute she captured in our driveway. If you've never tried them, these are really fun fireworks that launch parachuters into the air that float down slowly so the kids can chase them everywhere...

Margaret retrieved her share of parachutes over at the Barrette's party. She even had enough to decorate her hair with them!

This is Jeff getting ready to set off his ballistic creation--a parachute launcher on wheels, that (in theory) could be aimed by the operator in order to get the parachutes to land in a particular place. In this case, the goal was to launch from up in the cul-de-sac so that the paratroopers would land in the Barrette's yard. Not so much... The first explosion tipped the thing over on its side and blew off the hook for the handle so that it launched the next couple parachuters parallel with the ground, right under a van in the neighbor's driveway. Not sure Jeff will be invited back to participate in the "create your own firework" event next year.
